The thrill of seeing your own images come to life in a beautiful handmade book is truly addictive!  It is a fantastic way to curate and share a selection of your photographs with others.  It is so much more tactile than sharing electronic images on a screen of whatever sort and much more practical than making and framing large prints, which you then must find precious wall space to accommodate.  The drum leaf book structure that we will be teaching in this workshop is an ideal form for including images of different sizes, including full double page spreads as the pages lay flat across each spread.

Over the course of 2 full days, we will take you through a step-by-step process from selecting images around a theme that you have chosen to the outcome of a unique hand-bound book. Adrian has a wealth of experience and expertise in the selection, editing and printing of images.  On our first day, he will guide and instruct you in a way that will enable you to produce prints of a high quality to form the pages of your book.  We will discuss possible layouts, the inclusion of text – whether that be a simple title page on a single page or multiple text pages.  We will share useful templates and tips for constructing pages for the book form that we have chosen for this workshop.

Clea will lead on the second day, taking you through the practical, hands-on process of turning your printed pages into a well-constructed book.  We will cover the selection of materials, safe and effective use of tools and the different elements involved in constructing a book block and then adding an attractive binding that complements your images. Your book will incorporate endpapers which can be patterned or plain, chosen from the wide selection that we have available.  You will also be able to select from a range of quality book cloths for your book cover (case). We are happy to offer advice about suitable choices based on practicality and aesthetics.

Our workshops are sociable events for small groups of creative individuals. Previous clients have told us that this is an aspect of our residential workshops that they particularly enjoy! In addition to the more organised teaching sessions, we will spend time together in the evenings at our home and in local restaurants.  This allows time to share ideas and experiences in a relaxed setting.  We would encourage you to bring along examples of any books that you have made previously that you are happy to share.

You will leave our workshop having learned the key skills needed to make a stylish book of your own and with a set of instructions, resources and suggestions regarding tool kit that will enable you to continue your own journey into book creation.

Your tutors

Clea's parents were antiquarian book dealers and she was brought up in a bookshop. Her dad still runs a bookshop today. After early retirement, Clea re-connected with her love of book making and taught Adrian how to make them too. Whilst this is a new addition to the portfolio, you are in good hands as we have led quite a few workshops over the past 18-months. Adrian brings his editing and printing skills to the workshop, helping you to select, edit and print your book pages to the highest standard.
